Wounded Warrior Event

Postby TeamSobi on Tue Apr 21, 2009 12:34 pm

I am trying to get some backing from people in the area to do a event with the wounded warriors at the Ft. Campbell Warrior Transition unit. I am currently a squad leader here. I have emailed gramin about donating GPS's and MAGC national lead. I haven't been out stubling in the woods in the past few months. Just looking for some ideas and possible help.

This is a first time thing for me trying to organize something like this so any help is appreciated.

What kind of event are you looking to setup? If you want to setup a cache seeking event (Geocaching 101) rather than just a get together you have to decide whether you want to have this off post or on. If on post and want it listed on GC.com, you may consider making it at/by the horse stables that way anyone can come to it without having to get a pass. You may also approach the MWR and see if they are willing to setup a geocaching friendly area out in the MWR areas like the lakes or rivers available to fish. Those (at least most) areas are not really used for training so they are available year round and not subject to closures. Let me know what kind of help you need, we should be able to generate some interest here and on the main GC forums. There are many generous people on the geocoin forums that may be willing to donate coins and such for an event for the troops specially those whom are recovering from injuries.
I can help by donating containers, caching logs, caching container labels and MAGC logo stickers and I also have an extensive Powerpoint Geocaching 101/102 presentation setup for MAGC. If the schedule is right I may be able to help setup as well, so keep us posted.

I was thinking about having out at destiny park or waholi pavillion. Right now in my company I have 6 people that showed interest. I have emailed Garmin about donating GPS's and am waiting for a reply back from them in the next few days. That is the the big thing, the people that showed interest do not have a GPS and the unit that I am dosen't have them. So right now it is a wait on them. Unless we get them paired up with some one and send them out in teams. That is the only other thing I can come up with.

Chances are they won't donate any GPS units, they are just too costly to just donate. They have "donated" in the past but that was more of a promotional thing which greatly promoted their product. They may donate some GPS items like maybe some cases, stickers, pens etc but doubtfully GPS units.

Now, that should not be a showstopper. You can always have gps units lent to you which you can then sign out to them for the event. First thing that needs to be done is garner interest from MWR and maybe BOSS, that way there can be a greater dissemination on post. The event can be billed as a Wounded Warrior Geocaching event but open to others (mandatory if listed on GC.com) to come out and participate in the event. That way if only a few of your troops show up there can still be enough people attend to both participate and show their support for the troops. But I must caution you to keep the Wounded Warrior aspect toned down, GC will not post any events that have any hint of an agenda no matter how noble.

Roger. I will keep that in mind. My wife and I are going to sit down this weekend and brainstorm this and figure out what we would like to do.

After sitting down and talking it out this weekend I do not think I would be able to take care of this in the next few months. I start Pathfinder and college this up coming month. I will get the details laid out but I will have to hold off till July at the earliest.

Rodger, let me know if I can help when you decide to get it up and running.
